Mula OS vs Scaling Up: Scoreboard, Align and Rhythm

Scaling Up, Verne Harnish's follow-on to Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, is the other big management framework growing companies adopt. It comes with free one-page tools, a worldwide coach network and official software.

This post compares Scaling Up and its software with Mula OS, shows what each costs for a 10-person team, and says when to use which.

What Scaling Up is

Scaling Up organises a growing business around four decisions: People, Strategy, Execution and Cash. Its tools are deliberately compact, and many are free to download from scalingup.com:

Scaling Up lists more than 290 coaches worldwide. Coaching fees are not published ("investment varies depending on the program and level of engagement").

The software. The official tool is Scaling Up Scoreboard, powered by Align. It covers the OPSP, a Critical Numbers dashboard, daily and weekly huddles and priorities, with an AI coach. Scoreboard shows a 7-day trial and a demo request rather than prices. Align publishes its own pricing, which is the best public guide. Rhythm Systems, whose platform was originally built around the One-Page Strategic Plan, does not publish prices.

What Mula OS is

Mula OS is a corporatisation system for family and founder-run businesses: a free 91-question readiness assessment, a 143-step Roadmap and 22 Excel workbooks that build the company's finance, operations, people, compliance and governance systems, with Malaysia and Singapore rules built in. (Part 1 has the full tour.)

As with EOS software, this is not a like-for-like product comparison. Align and Rhythm are live tools your team logs into; Mula OS is files you own. The comparison is useful because owners often weigh the same budget between them.

The genuine overlap: Cash

Of the four Scaling Up decisions, Cash is where the two overlap most. Scaling Up's cash tools (Cash Acceleration Strategies and the Power of One) are about levers: price, volume, cost of goods, overheads, debtor days, stock days and creditor days.

Mula OS's Finance Ops workbook produces the numbers those levers act on: a linked income statement, balance sheet and cash flow from your bank lines and invoices, a 13-week cash forecast that opens on your actual ledger balance, and a month-end close checklist. Pricing & Unit Economics and the KPI Dashboard add margin and the numbers owners usually carry in their heads.

Put simply, Scaling Up tells you which cash levers to pull; Mula OS gives you the books that show whether pulling them worked.

Using both

The two fit together cleanly:

  1. Build with Mula OS. Work through the Roadmap until the business has reliable monthly numbers and basic controls (Stage 3).
  2. Plan and run with Scaling Up. Fill in the One-Page Strategic Plan, feed its Critical Numbers from Mula OS's KPI Dashboard and Finance Ops, and use Mula OS's Strategy Analysis and Business Case Builder when a strategic option needs a proper case with scenarios, NPV and kill criteria.
